In an essay, compare and contrast the excerpt from Barrio Boy and “A Day’s Wait”.  First, define fiction and nonfiction, and tell which story is a work of fiction and which is a work of nonfiction.  Then, describe the narrator of each work.  From what point of view does each narrator tell his story?  Finally, compare and contrast the main characters and the use of dialogue in each story.

7th Grade Literature essay questions:  Choose one of the following and prepare to write a well written essay during tomorrow's literature test be sure to use textual support in your essay.

1.  In an essay, consider what the driver of the black Buick in An American Childhood might have to say about the snowball incident and the chase.  What might he think of the children?  How might he explain his continuing the chase long after "any normal adult would have quit"? In your essay, explain what information the man would reveal that Dillard, as a first-person narrator, does not reveal.

2.  An author's purpose is his or her reason for writing.  Writers of autobiographies have many different reasons for telling their life story.  In an essay, explain what Annie Dillard's purpose might have been for writing about this incident from her childhood.  Support your explanation with details from the excerpt An American Childhood.
